STATEMENT: On BioWare's Closure and the Cancellation of Mass Effect 5

Today, we don't want to speak as We Are Mass Effect. Today, we want to speak as María and Ariel, the two people behind this project.

BioWare has been one of the game developers that has influenced us the most throughout our lives, especially through what we consider to be its magnum opus, Mass Effect. We knew BioWare was going through an incredibly difficult period, and that the end of an era, perhaps even the end of the studio itself, was becoming more of a near certainty than a distant possibility after EA’s buyout. It hasn’t made reading the announcement any less heartbreaking. We’re so grateful to every single person who has made BioWare what it is and brought these games to life, touching the hearts of so many of us. We sincerely wish the very best to everyone who has poured so much of themselves into these games and, in doing so, brought so much happiness to so many people.

As with other EA franchises, Mass Effect will very likely end up in the hands of another developer within the EA ecosystem... Or perhaps not. Perhaps the franchise will be put on ice, and we'll never hear from it again. But none of that changes how we feel, because Mass Effect will live forever. We will continue sharing news (whatever news there may be), reflecting on, and talking about this universe, because to us, Mass Effect transcends both EA and BioWare. We know this is a moment of sadness. We really do. But we must never lose hope, and above all, we must never forget just how much Mass Effect means to so many people.

Remember, WE ARE MASS EFFECT.

#MassEffectIsAlive

With love and gratitude,
María and Ariel.
